About Us

The Beginning

In the fateful spring of 1991, P. Daniel Newman, Jason Coryell, Brian Stephenson, Liz Radford, Josh Einsohn, Devorah Rosner, and Lora Norback came together at Washington University’s famous ThurtenE Carnival to perform for carnival attendees.  They loved it so much that in the fall of 1991 the group returned to hold auditions and sing a cappella music under an official name: Mosaic Whispers, becoming Washington University’s premiere co-ed a cappella group. Little did the founders know, however, that this combination of musicality, friendship, and ridiculousness would last and grow for the next 26 wild and crazy years.

Since the group formed, over 120 unique individuals have been selected and dubbed “Whispers”. While the current group’s membership may change from year to year, the Whisper family is a constant–when you join Mosaic Whispers, you are a Whisper for life.

The Whispers established a name for themselves in the national a cappella community with stellar live performances, recent wins at ICCA, award-winning studio albums, and tours around the country.  The group created an annual spring concert, Splash of Color, that quickly became our biggest event of the year.  Guest groups from Washington University, as well as colleges across the country, are invited to perform at the concert, which draws hundreds of undergraduate attendees and numerous Whisper alumni.

The Music

Mosaic Whispers have been fortunate enough to get some amazing musical opportunities over the last few years.  In the fall of 2008, Washington University hosted the Vice Presidential Debate. Mosaic Whispers appeared on a live broadcast of MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews for a national audience of millions (this was actually our second time to appear on Hardball, the first in October of 2004 when Washington University hosted a Presidential Debate).

Later in the fall of 2008, our arrangement of “Still Fighting It” was selected to be featured on the CD Ben Folds Presents University A Cappella.  Ben drove down to St. Louis to record with the group right here at Washington University.  In the spring, we drove to Manhattan, Kansas to return the favor and open for one of the legs of Ben Folds’s national tour!

The Whispers perform regularly on campus and around St. Louis throughout the year and also tour extensively.  St. Louis knows us from countless performances and, more recently, from appearances on local radio station 93.7 The Bull and TV station FOX2.  Nationally, we’ve traveled to Milwaukee, WI, Seattle, WA, Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA, Grand Rapids, MI, Washington D.C., Memphis, TN, Denver, CO, New York, NY,  Miami, FL, San Diego, CA, Madison, WI, Boston, MA, and more representing Washington University and performing for audiences of all ages.

In addition to countless live performances, we have produced 10 studio albums to date, as well as one four-track EP. The group’s most recent albums have garnered rave reviews. “Behind Bars”, our eighth album, has songs featured on national compilations, and has won multiple awards. Our 10th album, “Wavelength”, was released at our annual concert in the spring of 2015 and received a RARB Track of the Year selection and 5 Contemporary A Capella Record Award nominations. The Whispers’ recent releases can be purchased at our live performances; Behind Bars, Page 9, and Wavelength are also available on iTunes and Spotify!
